Undergraduate Erik Black Graduates and Wins Research Award!

                May 4, 2018: Undergraduate researcher Erik Black graduated with                  his B.S. in Molecular Biology. He won the Outstanding Research                     Award for seniors graduating from the CMMB department. He plans                 to work as a technician in a neuroscience lab prior to attending                         graduate school. Congrats Erik! 

Chase Powell Graduates with his Ph.D.!!!
December 9 ,2017: Doctoral candidate Chase Powell graduated with his Ph. D. Degree in Cell and Molecular Biology. This was after a successful defense of his Doctoral Dissertation on The Role of Heat Shock Transcription Factor 1 in Ovarian Cancer Epithelial- Mesenchymal Transition and Drug Sensitivity. Congrats Dr. Powell!!! ​

Undergraduate Alana Snyder Graduates and Wins Research Award!

May 6, 2017: Undergraduate researcher Alana Snyder graduated with her B.S. in Chemical Engineering this Saturday! She won an Excellence in Research Award from the Office of Undergraduate Research, and the Florida High Tech Corridor Matching Grants Research Program Award! She is now working as a Research Associate of Immunology at Moffitt Cancer Center. Congratulations Alana! 

Undergraduate Mark Noble Graduates and Wins Research Award!

May 6, 2017: Undergraduate researcher Mark Noble has graduated with his B.S. in Molecular Biology this Saturday! He won the Outstanding Research Award for seniors graduating from the CMMB department. He will begin pursuing his Ph.D. in Biomedical and Biological Sciences in the Fall at Yale University. Congrats Mark!

May 6, 2017: Jessica Brunquell graduated with her Ph.D. in molecular biology this Saturday! She will go on to become a medical writer/editor for Education and Training Systems International in Raleigh, North Carolina. Congratulations Jessica, we are very proud of you!  

Three Lab Undergrads Graduate!

May 6, 2016: Three Westerheide undergraduate researchers have graduated! Lori-Ann Bowie will go on to attain a degree from University of Florida School of Pharmacy. Ashley Ubaldini will continue into the George Washington University/ National Institutes of Health joint Ph.D. program. Stephanie Morris will pursue an M.D. from the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine. Congratulations and good luck!

May 6, 2016: Undergraduate researcher Mark Noble won the CMMB Undergraduate Research Scholarship Award. Graduating undergraduate Ashley Ubaldini won the CMMB Student of Excellence Award. Graduating Undergraduate Stephanie Morris won the Outstanding CMMB Student Award. Graduate student Jessica Brunquell won the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. Congratulations to all!

April 15, 2016: Undergraduate researcher Mark Noble won the Research Excellence Award from the Undergraduate Research and Arts Colloquium at USF for his poster presentation on the role of chromatin remodeling factors in regulating the Heat Shock Response.

March 31st, 2016: Undergraduate research Mark Noble was awarded honorable mention from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. "The purpose of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, as stated in the enabling legislation, is to alleviate a critical current and future shortage of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. A more realistic statement of the purpose, in today's terms, is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified individuals to those fields of academic study and research."

February 15, 2016:  Doctoral Candidate Jessica Brunquell was selected by the USF Graduate School to represent the CMMB department at a Lunch & Learn Session hosted by the University of South Florida System President Judy Genshaft and Senior Vice Provost and Dean for the Office of Graduate Studies Dwayne Smith. At this lunch, she was the graduate student voice for her department to discuss student experiences and other relevant topics. 

Trill presents research at AACR Ovarian Cancer Conference!

October 18, 2015:  Doctoral Candidate Trillitye Paullin presented her research at the 2015 AACR Ovarian Cancer Research Conference in Orlando, FL.  She was accompanied by her Undergraduate Researchers, Anne Arthur and Victoria Sockman.

In recognition of their service, leadership and academic excellence, the newly selected class will receive over $1.4 million in scholarships to pursue their higher education and continue their service. After an extensive selection process, the scholars were chosen from over 7,500 interested applicants, and they will represent 39 Universities and colleges nationwide."

Chris Menzie & Candice Aiosa Graduate with Master's and Bachelor's Degrees!

Chris Menzie, MS & Candice Aiosa both celebrated their graduation from USF this Spring.  Chris has completed his Master's NT in Cellular, Molecular, and Microbiology while Candice graduated with her second Bachelor's degree.  Both students worked in Dr. Westerheide's lab for four semesters under the direction of Trillitye Finlayson.  Chris is currently applying to local forensics and research positions.  Candice has accepted a position with an engineering company as a general manager.  Congratulations to both!!

Jessica Brunquell Wins Top Position at the 6th Annual Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Symposium!

PhD student Jessica Brunquell was selected as one of the winners of the 6th Annual Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Symposium at USF. Her award letter stated: "It was a very competitive field, but your work was deemed among the best by our panel of judges." She will receive 500 dollars in travel funds to present her research, and has been invited to the Student Research Awards luncheon on April 25th. Congratulations! 

Philip Bowers Wins the Phi Lambda Epsilon Award!

The chemistry department has awarded our Philip Bowers with the Phi Lambda Epsilon award for his involvement in in the University community through academics, athletics, and research. This award is annually awarded to outstanding students who have achieved excellence in their academic commitment and service. Congratulations to Philip! 

19th Annual Midwest Stress Response & Molecular Chaperone Meeting

In January 2014, Dr. Westerheide attended the Annual Midwest Stress Meeting at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.  Graduate students Jessica Brunquell and Andrew Deonarine joined Dr. Westerheide and Jessica presented her ongoing project during the poster session.  

Rocky D. Bull Visits the Lab!

This Fall we had a very special guest appearance by the University of South Florida's mascot, Rocky!  He assisted in some bench work and general bull-ing around.  Thanks Rocky!

AACR Ovarian Cancer Research Convention!

Dr. Westerheide took two of her graduate students, Chase and Trill, and an undergraduate, Candice to the 2013 American Association for Cancer Research Ovarian Cancer conference in Miami Florida. While there, Chase presented his work associating HSF1 with Ovarian Cancer.  They also enjoyed some of Miami's great restaurants and sight seeing.

Rachel successfully completed her defense on March 1st!  She is Dr. Westerheide's first PhD student and will be continuing her career as a post-doc at the University of Southern California, Davis School of Gerontology in Dr. Kelvin Davies lab.
